映画は、タイムズ紙の架空の宗教担当記者が特集記事執筆のためホーキング氏にインタビューするという展開で，ホーキング氏は実名で登場し，宇宙理論を解説するという．

ホーキング博士は現在64歳．22歳の時、筋委縮性側索硬化症（ALS）が発病し，車いすで生活を続けている． 声が出せないことから，コンピュータの助けを借りて会話する．一般書の執筆をはじめとして，科学の啓蒙活動にも熱心で，以前はテレビ番組「スター・トレック」にポーカーで遊ぶ役としてちょっとだけ出演したこともある．

北朝鮮側は，「制裁決議は宣戦布告」と見解を述べ，二回目の核実験を行いそうだ，との報道も続いている．不穏そのものである．

田中宇氏の ニュースは，相変わらず「報道の裏読み」を解説していて絶妙ではあるが，『北朝鮮の核実験は、米中関係、日中関係、日米関係のすべてを、新しい局面に引っぱり出した』という結論は，正しそうだ．

一連の報道の中で私が注目したのは，「スーパーカミオカンデは，核実験の時刻には，特別なニュートリノを捉えていない」との小さな記事．富山県の神岡にある宇宙線研究所のニュートリノ観測装置 SuperKamiokandeは，超新星爆発のニュートリノを捉えたことで小柴氏のノーベル賞受賞(2002年)に結びついた施設である．

核爆発があれば，ニュートリノも発生するので，スーパーカミオカンデで北朝鮮の核実験の確証が得られるのでは？と思って検索すると，どうも無理らしい．スーパーカミオカンデは，高エネルギー領域をターゲットにしているからだそうだ．カミオカンデは，2001年11月に光センサーが連鎖的に破損する，という事故を起こした．このとき，わずか1週間後に政府が特別予算を組んで，修復を確約したので，私は「対北朝鮮原子炉監視装置」かと疑っていたのだが．．．単なる邪推であったか．

ところで，同じ神岡鉱山の旧カミオカンデの場所に設置されている東北大のカムランド(KamLAND)は，原子炉ニュートリノをターゲットにした「ニュートリノ振動」検出装置なので，まさに今回の検出装置のはず． （もちろんFAQページ には「対北朝鮮」なんて書いていないが．）

カムランドのデータは，リアルタイム分析を行っていないので，観測結果はすぐには出ないらしいが，もしpositiveに出たら，素粒子物理学の役割が再認識されることになるだろう．

ところでところで，環境省は， 環境放射線等モニタリングデータ公開システム http://housyasen.taiki.go.jp/ を17日，公開した． 国内12箇所の空間放射線（ガンマ線）やアルファ濃度などの観測値を １日１回更新するという．環境相は「北朝鮮の核実験公表とはたまたま時期が重なっただけ．今のところ異常なデータは出ていない」と語った（10/17 朝日新聞）らしい．この報道も邪推したくなる今日このごろである．

  CHEMISTRY: Antonio Mulet, Jose Javier Benedito and Jose Bon of the University of Valencia, Spain, and Carmen Rossello of the University of Illes Balears, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, for their study "Ultrasonic Velocity in Cheddar Cheese as Affected by Temperature."
• 生物学賞　マラリア蚊であるハマダラカのメスが人間の足の匂いと同様にランブール・チーズの匂いを好むことの証明
  BIOLOGY: Bart Knols (of Wageningen Agricultural University, in Wageningen, the Netherlands; and of the National Institute for Medical Research, in Ifakara Centre, Tanzania, and of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Vienna Austria) and Ruurd de Jong (of Wageningen Agricultural University and of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Italy) for showing that the female malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae is attracted equally to the smell of limburger cheese and to the smell of human feet.

昨年は，ドクター中松が「34年間の食事をすべて詳細に記録し，写真撮影し，解析していること」に関して栄養賞を受賞したが，今年は日本人の受賞はなかった．日本人受賞は昨年まで4年連続を記録していたが，途絶えてしまった．
