物理学分野は， Albert Fert（フランス）と Peter Gruenberg（ドイツ）の２人で， 贈賞理由は「電子のスピンを蓄えて情報に変換する「スピントロニクス(spintronics, spin+electronics)」と呼ばれる新しい研究分野の端緒となる，巨大磁気抵抗効果(GMR; Giant Magnetoresistance)の独立な発見」(for their independent discovery of the giant magnetoresistance phenomenon (GMR), thereby launching a new field of research and applications known as spintronics, which utilizes the spin of the electron to store and transport information.) この２人は，先日の日本国際賞の受賞者でもある．
数学分野は， Stephen J. Smale（アメリカ）と，Harry Furstenberg（イスラエル）の２人． Smaleの贈賞理由は，「微分幾何，力学系，数理経済学などにおける基礎的な発展をもたらした偉大な貢献」( for his groundbreaking contributions that have played a fundamental role in shaping differential topology, dynamical systems, mathematical economics, and other subjects in mathematics)． Furstenbergの贈賞理由は，「エルゴード理論，確率，位相力学，対称空間と一様流解析に対する偉大な貢献」 (for his profound contributions to ergodic theory, probability, topological dynamics, analysis on symmetric spaces and homogenous flows.)．
賞金は各賞US $100,000，複数受賞者の場合は等分される．
